As a son of New Approach for whom Godolphin saw fit to part with 180,000gns as a yearling, one might have imagined a future in Pattern races over middle distances for Magical Effect. However, at Thirsk on Friday he broke his maiden over five furlongs, and not before time on his sixth start.

Ruth Carr, who took over the training of Magical Effect this year and has now led him to two seconds and a first, explained that his was primarily a triumph of patience.
