California sunshine awaits Limato as connections declared themselves delighted with the July Cup winner’s performance under slate grey skies at York yesterday.

The prospect of fast ground had prompted owner Paul Jacobs to pay £30,000 to supplement Limato for the Nunthorpe Stakes, but the rain arrived in time for Mecca’s Angel and her blistering speed proved just too much for the 15-8 favourite on his first start over the minimum trip.

“It was a fantastic run,” said trainer Henry Candy. “Mecca’s Angel is a specialist at this distance and we’re not, but he’s run well and we’ve had a lot of fun.
