Michael Dods may no longer have Mabs Cross to call on now, but he has bounced back from the retirement of a star before and signalled his hopes for another good season after striking with the potentially classy Brunch.

Group 1 winner Mabs Cross left his Darlington yard for stud but the trainer hopes that Dakota Gold can make a mark in Pattern races in 2020.

And after Brunch had given 7lb and a comfortable beating to his novice median auction rivals, Dods said: "He's a nice horse. He won nicely at Newcastle last year and he'd have been out earlier if we hadn't had the hold-up.
