Bristol De Mai emerges as the best Betfair Chase winner of the past decade
As with his two previous wide-margin wins in testing ground at Haydock, it is hard to put an accurate figure on Bristol De Mai's (185+) demolition of his rivals in Saturday's Betfair Chase.
A positive interpretation of his 22-length beating of the smart Otago Trial in last season's Peter Marsh could justify him being rated in excess of 180 and it's hard to believe this latest performance wasn't superior to that.
Admittedly he was the only one to pass the stamina test in the ground, and a lead of around 11 lengths at the third-last fence was extended to nearly 60 lengths as his rivals walked up the straight.
However, Bristol De Mai still managed to clock a winning time more than ten seconds quicker than that recorded by smart handicapper Chase The Spud (RPR 151) in the following handicap.
It remains to be seen whether he can run up to anything like this mark at a different track on better ground, but in terms of a performance it is hard not to rate it as the best put up by a winner of the race in the past decade.
