Brian Hughes out of luck on reroute from Cheltenham as Sean Quinlan bags double
Thursday: Hexham
Champion jockey-elect Brian Hughes was rerouted from Cheltenham to the Northumberland track primarily to ride Minelladestination in the two-mile novice hurdle, but he missed out.
He came up short when the market leader was outpointed by the gambled on Fringill Dike, who was 3-1 in the morning but sent off at 5-4.
Partnered by Sean Quinlan, Fringill Dike extended the recent good run of North Yorkshire trainer Jedd O'Keefe.
Quinlan told Sky Sports Racing: "He's improved with every run and did that well. He finished off well and will probably be better over two and a half miles."
Fitting St Patrick's Day winner
It was not only at Cheltenham that the Irish were among the winners as Dubai Devils landed his first British success the featured Grand National Handicap Chase.
The 11-year-old was tackling four miles for the first time but you would not have known it the way he bounded clear in the straight to deny Morozov Cocktail.
The 9-1 chance, ridden by 5lb claimer Peter Kavanagh, had made three previous unsuccessful visits to the track for County Dublin-based trainer Paul Stafford.

BBC Countrywide presenter Matt Baker was at the track as sponsor of the Matt Baker Travels With Mum & Dad Maiden Hurdle, which will form part of a TV show to be shown on March 30.
Baker is in the midst of a tour by caravan of the north-east with his parents and picked the best-turned-out and also presented the prize to the connections of game winner Luke, who was completing a double for Quinlan.
