Bottoms up! Twoshotsoftequila downs rival as Menzies celebrates double
Sunday: Sedgefield
There was plenty of cause for a celebratory drink for connections of Twoshotsoftequila as the four-year-old powered from last to first to intiate a double at the course for local trainer Rebecca Menzies.
The 8-1 shot had yet to win in five starts but stayed on gamely to prove a popular winner under Richie McLernon in the 2m1f maiden hurdle.
"It'll be more than two shots of tequila tonight," the winning jockey joked. "He's a locally trained winner and locally owned, so it's fairytale stuff. He wasn't a complete outsider but he certainly wasn't fancied. I'd say there were plenty of people here who backed him, so it's brilliant."
Menzies' successful raid at her local track continued when Road Warrior went one better than last year in the 2m3½f handicap chase under Peter Coleman, making all to hold off the late challenge of Poldark Cross.
Menzies made it an across-the-card treble courtesy of favourite Fever Roque in the 2m4½f novice handicap hurdle at Market Rasen.
Top treble
Brian Hughes and Donald McCain enjoyed a 43-1 treble, kickstarted by long odds-on shot Richmond Lake in the opening 2m4f novice hurdle.
The 1-7 favourite cantered to a 27-length success, with the trainer-jockey combination also striking with 2m1f handicap chase winner Blueberry Wine and bumper scorer Sweet Auburn.
