Battaash was breathtaking in the Nunthorpe but is he an all-time great?
Battaash was breathtaking in the Nunthorpe, but is he consistent enough to be an all-time great? Three of our experts give their views.
Battaash is getting better with age and his mindset has caught up to his talent. Three wins from four starts this year is consistent enough for me and he was defeated by another brilliant sprinter in Blue Point in the King's Stand. Battaash is only five, his campaign maps itself each season and as he lacks the requisite equipment for a life at stud hopefully he can repeat this term's feats for another couple of years and cement his place in history.

Of course he's an all-time great. It's true that he has underperformed twice before at York and has not been entirely straightforward, but he's hardly a one-hit wonder. Top class 5f races are very seldom won by that sort of margin, but Battaash has done it not once, not twice, but three times. And on three different tracks, in three different campaigns and on widely varied ground. The ease with which he travelled through the middle of the race before bursting clear at the press of a button had to be seen to be believed. What more do you want?
