Haydock on a raceday morning would be a poor place to meditate.

At a time when the enclosures were almost deserted, music blared out from the racecourse speakers. There was a bit of Britney, the Grease Megamix and the Spice Girls' 1995 debut hit, Wannabe, the one in which one of the girls declares: "So tell me what you want, what you really, really want."

Had clerk of the course Kirkland Tellwright been able to hear it – and there's a good chance they heard it in Wigan – his answer would not have been "zig-a-zig-ah", but rather "rain".
