In the end, what we got on Qipco British Champions Day was a British champion.

It would have taken a performance of stratospheric proportions for Baaeed to usurp Flightline at the top of the sport's global rankings. That performance did not materialise, yet it is a measure of Baaeed's extraordinary talent that a pale imitation of the horse who has repeatedly dazzled, thrilled and delivered was still able to finish a close fourth.

Not a world champion, but still one of the best the world has ever seen.
