The curtain came down on another jump season at Sandown. Here are some of the highlights.

Pride of place again goes to Altior, who broke the record for the longest winning sequence over jumps held by Big Buck's with his 19th in a row as he landed a third bet365 Celebration Chase.

Nicky Henderson and Nico de Bonville immediately raised the exciting prospect of a step up in trip next season with the 32Red King George in their sights. Bookmakers unanimously made him favourite ahead of Cyrname at no bigger than 4-1. He is just 14-1 with Betfair for the Magners Cheltenham Gold Cup.

Bryony Frost, who collected her Stobart champion conditional award on the day, made her first ride since breaking her collarbone four weeks ago a winning one thanks to old ally Black Corton with the partnership romping away with the Oaksey Chase.

Black Corton completed a double for Paul Nicholls on the day he was officially crowned champion trainer for the 11th time. Getaway Trump got the ball rolling in the novices' championship final handicap hurdle.

While Nicholls signed off with prize-money earned at £3.3 million, Frost finished just under £12,000 short of £1m prize-money and recorded her first 50 in a season.

Even punters lost count of the number of gambles in the bet365 Gold Cup but the midweek move for Talkischeap proved the moneymaker. The Alan King-trained novice was 20-1 over Easter but was as short as 4-1 two days ago. He was returned 7-1 as West Approach was the last springer in the market, sent off 5-1 favourite from 25-1 overnight.

Last-race relief

There were six winning favourites on the Flat at Sandown on Friday, and a repeat looked likely when Richard Johnson hit the front on 11-4 market leader Wait For Me. However, deposed champion trainer Nicky Henderson and Nico de Boinville came to the rescue of bookmakers with 14-1 chance Colonial Dreams, who rallied to win, leaving Johnson to finish the season on exactly 200 winners at a 20 per cent strike-rate.

Pricing up next season

Bookmakers were quick to produce prices for future events after the top-class action. Richard Johnson, collecting his fourth Stobart jockeys' title, is 2-1 to top Sir Anthony McCoy's record career total which involves more than another 700 winners! Quotes for Talkischeap ranged from 14-1 for the Ladbrokes Trophy (Hennessy) at Newbury and 33-1 for the 2020 Randox Health Grand National at Aintree.

Shortest and longest

Altior took the honour of shortest-priced favourite on the card at 1-6, the 15th time in the 19-win run he has been sent off odds-on with 4-1 his biggest price when winning the 2016 Supreme at the Cheltenham Festival. He has been odds-on in all his five races this year: 8-13, 1-8, 1-10, 4-11 and 1-6.
