When The French Furze won the 2003 Fighting Fifth he caused a 25-1 surprise, so it was only fitting that a similar shock took place in the race that carries his name.

Ask Ben, who was making his Rules debut for Graeme McPherson, got the best of a thrilling four-way finish that included the short-priced Dan Skelton-trained favourite Beakstown, returning at odds of 50-1.

McPherson said: "He was second in a point to a horse that won for Paul Nicholls in the week, so the form of that was good. Honestly, he doesn't show a lot at home. He gallops and jumps and I think the rain we've had made the difference."
