Apprentice Villiers hoping to go one step beyond with big summer on the cards
Apprentice jockey Angus Villiers is eyeing a "big summer" after notching victory for his boss Richard Spencer aboard One Step Beyond in the 7f handicap.
The 5lb claimer has only ridden on 28 occasions so far this year, but is raring to go as the turf season hits top gear following success on the four-year-old, who broke his maiden tag at the eighth attempt.
"The visor has done the trick, Mr Spencer has played his cards right with this horse and we think he's got a bit of ability," he said.
"I wasn't very busy through the winter, so I'm hoping to be a lot busier from now on. I'm targeting a big summer."
Ryan on target
Rossa Ryan is well on his way to eclipse his best yearly total of winners as he celebrated his 38th and 39th victories of the campaign aboard Zwelela in the 7f handicap and Lostwithiel in the 1m4f novice.
The double means the Royal Ascot-winning jockey is now halfway towards his current best seasonal tally of 78 winners, which was achieved in 2018.
