Apprentice Luke Catton took his first steps towards emulating his idol James Doyle when partnering his first winner at the 19th attempt on Bamako De Chatelet in the finale.

The 19-year-old has been attached to winning trainer Ian Williams since leaving school and, understandably, was not expecting to get off the mark on this 20-1 chance, but Bamako De Chatelet defied those odds in convincing style in the 1m4f apprentice handicap.

Catton said: "I've never finished higher than fourth in any of my previous rides but fair play to Mr Williams and the owners for giving me the opportunity.
