Captain Guy Disney might not have been the first rider to complete the historic double when he and Rathlin Rose added the Grand Military Gold Cup to their victory in the Royal Artillery Gold Cup, but he was undoubtedly the first to do so with only one leg.

The Afghan war veteran, who lost his lower right leg in 2009, had last month become the first amputee in the modern era to win a race under rules in Britain, but he was as modest here as he was then, making light of his disability and deflecting the credit in all directions before joking about his availability for Cheltenham.

After Rathlin Rose had brushed aside a 5lb penalty in a race in which last month's runner-up Ardkilly Witness unseated his rider at halfway, Disney joked: "If anyone is looking for a one-legged jockey next week I'll be knocking around and keeping myself fairly free!"

Playing down his role on the David Pipe-trained 7-4 favourite he said: "That's just magical – what a lovely horse. He is class. Absolute class. He's got to be quite decent to win with a pretty average amateur like me on board."
