He has not yet matched Sprinter Sacre's career-best mark (190), but in running out a hugely impressive winner of Saturday's Betfair Tingle Creek Chase, Altior (178+) earned a Racing Post Rating slightly superior to that posted by his former stablemate when he took the same race in 2012.

Right-handed, left-handed, good ground, soft ground, it all seems to come alike to jump racing's brightest star and, despite surrendering a little bit of ground at the final fence, he produced his customary strong finish to power clear of a peak-form Un De Sceaux (174).

The winner of a weaker running of this race in 2016, the Willie Mullins-trained veteran is judged to have run right up to his very best but he is just not in the same league as the winner.
