On the Wednesday in March when most racing fans were preparing to watch such mouth-watering fare as the Neptune and the Champion Chase, trainer Micky Hammond had other matters to attend to.

He was helping the vet patch up Alderbrook Lad, who earlier in the day had got loose on Middleham Moor, galloped through the village and nearly ended his life, never mind his career.

Hammond said: "It was horrendous. I was chasing him, he was going flat-out with the saddle around his middle. He turned over twice on the road and ended up under a 4x4.
