Precise or Diamond Necklace: Aidan O'Brien has two thrilling Classic fillies - but who is better?

Both Diamond Necklace and Precise have won a Group 1 race
Both Diamond Necklace and Precise have won a Group 1 in the last week

Precise sparkled on the Rowley Mile on Friday when running away with the Fillies' Mile and she is now as short as 7-2 for next year's 1,000 Guineas with race sponsors Betfred.

Her victory came just five days after stablemate Diamond Necklace won a Group 1 of her own, the Prix Marcel Boussac, and the pair now dominate the betting for next year's Newmarket Classic. We asked our team how they compare the two star juveniles Diamond Necklace and what Classic campaign they would map out for them.

'I haven’t seen a better 1,000 Guineas or Oaks prospect this season'

By Richard Birch, tipster

Precise progressed with every run at 7f and, unsurprisingly, produced another career best stepped up to a mile.

There was never any moment during the Group 1 Fillies’ Mile where I felt Precise wasn’t going to win.

By far the last off the bridle, she quickened away in the manner of a possible multiple Classic winner.

Comparisons will inevitably be made with stablemate Diamond Necklace, who arguably possesses the sexier profile as she is unbeaten.

Christophe Soumillon called Diamond Necklace a "special filly” after her Longchamp success, but I just have the feeling Precise could be very special.

I haven’t seen a better 1,000 Guineas or Oaks prospect this season.

'Autumn plans do not always work out'

By Peter Scargill, reporter

This time last year, we were wondering how Aidan O’Brien would divide up Lake Victoria, Fairy Godmother and Bedtime Story the following season given their exploits at two.

Given they have since won one race between them (albeit a Classic) goes to show how plans that seem so simple in the autumn do not always work out.

However, at this point you would foresee Precise going down the Guineas (be in Britain, Ireland and/or France) and Coronation Stakes route – she routed her rivals with superior speed on Friday – while Diamond Necklace strikes more as a middle distance filly, for all a start in Guineas would also seem highly likely.

'Precise has the brilliance you see in Classic winners'

By Oliver Barnard, reporter

Precise did more to impress me in the Fillies’ Mile than Diamond Necklace did in the Marcel Boussac, it was certainly more eye-catching.

The way she quickened down the stands’ side from the back of the pack made the rest of the Fillies' Mile field look like they were running in slow motion. That’s the sort of brilliance you see in future Classic winners.

I can see Precise following the path of Lake Victoria, contesting both the 1,000 Guineas in Britain and Ireland, while Diamond Necklace could head to Longchamp for the French equivalent. It would be great to see them come together afterwards for the Oaks.
