Recovering Brooke hoping to be back in action next month

Henry Brooke, the jump jockey who sustained eight broken ribs and a collapsed lung in a serious fall at Hexham last month, has issued a positive bulletin as he works towards a return to race-riding next month.

"I've got to see a consultant about my lung on November 28 but I'm hoping I'll pass that and can be back riding next month," Brooke said. "Everything is going well and I've been flat out in the gym.

"I've been riding out at my mum's and am focusing on getting passed by the doctor and getting back."

Brooke has been making the most of the facilities at Jack Berry House as he works his way back to full fitness and believes the specialist centre has had a positive impact on his mental wellbeing as well as his physical recuperation.

"I've been up at Jack Berry House and see the doctor there every Monday. It's a great place and has been absolutely brilliant for my recovery. Adam Nicol and Cam Hardie are both up there and it's been good to see the other lads – we can have a bit of a laugh together."

Brooke also said that the news of Freddy Tylicki's paralysis in a fall at Kempton had given him a sense of perspective about his own injuries.

He said: "It was upsetting to see what happened to Freddy. He'd had such a good year and didn't deserve what happened to him, no one does. I'm lucky that my injuries were nothing like as serious as that."
