The key to winning the Tote Ten To Follow in its old guise was to find as many winners of the 15 bonus point races as possible and taking that approach may again be the way forward.

The Ladbrokes Trophy at Newbury kicks off the competition and De Rasher Counter can win it, provided the going stays on the soft side. Emma Lavelle’s runner improved last season on testing ground and should come on for a pipe-opener over hurdles at Uttoxeter last month.

Last year’s JLT form has worked out well and it’s hard to leave out the one-two of Defi Du Seuil and Lostintranslation. Defi Du Seuil could go to the Champion Chase or Ryanair, while Lostintransation was awesome at Carlisle. I’ll take him for the King George and Gold Cup.

The addition of the Coral Welsh Grand National as a bonus race makes Now McGinty worth including. He wasn’t far off the best staying novice chasers last season and was narrowly beaten by Santini on his return. He looks a ready made Chepstow marathon contender.

Klassical Dream was below his best in the Morgiana but that race turned into a sprint from the home turn and he can bounce back. He covers the British and Irish Champion Hurdles.

I’m excited to see City Island over fences this season. He bolted up in the Ballymore at Cheltenham where he beat Champ, who was impressive on his chase debut at Newbury.

Paisley Park was peerless in the staying hurdle division last season and can’t be left out.

Then it’s on to two wildcards. I’ll take a chance on Joseph O’Brien’s pair Mortal and Darasso. Mortal is a second season staying chaser who could win handicaps, while Darasso won over hurdles and fences last season and his versatility could be invaluable for this.
