There were lengthy delays to racing at Kelso on Saturday as conditional jockey Conner McCann required medical attention following a fall in the 2m5f handicap hurdle.

McCann suffered a fall at the second flight when riding Diamond State for his boss Lucinda Russell in the 1.35 and was initially attended to on course, which caused a 15-minute delay to the 2.10.

Racing was delayed for a second time after that third race as the course awaited the arrival of an air ambulance.

The helicopter touched down around 3.15 and the 3m2f handicap chase, originally due off at 2.45, started at 3.20. However, after being assessed further, McCann was taken to hospital by road.

Russell said: "The air ambulance came from Edinburgh with a CT scan and they scanned his chest and legs and they were happy he could go by ambulance to Borders General Hospital. It looks like he's got an injury to both legs and his chest and a cut on his head."

The Kelso meeting was the second day of three on Racing Post Go North Weekend and the 2m5f handicap hurdle, which was won by Romeo Brown, was one of three series finals on the day.

McCann, who started out on the Flat, teamed up with Diamond State to win on his first ride over jumps at Musselburgh in November.

The 18-year-old, who has gained four wins from just 13 rides over jumps, only just returned to action the previous day at Musselburgh having been out injured since January.
