Punting pointers for Wednesday's meetings
Ayr: popular Copper Knight ventures north
There are few things popular handicapper Copper Knight has yet to do but he treads new ground on Wednesday with a first appearance at the West Scottish venue in the 5f handicap (2.00).
The 11-year-old has made more than 100 starts and seeks his 16th win in Ayr's opening contest following an encouraging fourth at Chester's May meeting two weeks ago. He drops significantly in grade for this.
David Allan knows the gelding better than most after partnering him 38 times and retains the ride, and the jockey has a 40 per cent strike-rate (2-5) at the track this year.
Trainer Tim Easterby said: "It's amazing to think he hasn't raced here before as he's been to many places, and I think he'll like the track. He's run two good races this season already despite his age and I think he can go well again."
Ayr's card also marks a return to race-riding for James Doyle, who has been out since late April with a broken collarbone. He returns with two rides, Underwriter (2.30) and Commanding Prince (3.30).
Ayr stat: Jason Hart
+48.50
The jockey's profit this year to £1 level stakes at Ayr this year (33 per cent strike-rate). He rides Sunny Smile (2.30), Glasses Up (4.05) and Sir Garfield (4.42)
Brighton: can Immediate Effect make his mark on return?
Sir Mark Prescott enjoyed a fruitful April with a 24 per cent strike-rate and he fields another potentially smart spring type in mile novice (6.30) contender Immediate Effect.
The three-year-old gelding made his debut towards the end of 2024 and got off to a flying start when winning at Wolverhampton in October. He was narrowly beaten next time out at Southwell, but was only three-quarters of a length behind winner Sex On Fire, who has won again since.
Immediate Effect returns from a 190-day break against just four rivals, and while he is the only one without race fitness, he will have benefited from a winter break.
He steps up to a mile here, which his dam has winning form over, and Prescott's regular rider Luke Morris gets the leg-up for the first time.
Chepstow: John Egan bids to extend purple patch
John Egan may have started the year in quiet fashion but he is enjoying a remarkable run of form and could extend his winning streak with two rides ast Chepstow.
The 56-year-old jockey went five months without a winner at the start of the year but has now won on four of his last eight rides, the two most recent scoring at 16-1 and 15-2.
Egan heads to Chepstow for two rides on Wednesday starting with Yoko in the 6f maiden (3.22) for David Evans, who also provided him with his winner at Redcar on Monday.
Egan then teams up with Grace Harris on Lady Dorchester, who sports first-time cheekpieces in the 5f handicap (4.25).
Chepstow stat: Archie Watson
47 per cent
The trainer's winning strike-rate (8-17) at Chepstow over the past five years with juveniles not in handicaps. He saddles Shaatir in the 6f maiden stakes (3.22)
Gowran: Deressa aims to deliver for Weld
Bigger prizes could await the winner of the 1m1½f fillies' contest (7.20), in which Deressa is just one of several potentially smart types.
The Dermot Weld-trained three-year-old was unsuccessful in four starts as a juvenile but took a big step forward here on her return last month when winning comfortably under Chris Hayes.
She earned a Racing Post Rating of 86 for that success, her best rating by some margin, and returns to the track in a bid to provide Weld with his third winner of the €17,000 contest in seven years.
Kempton: Drama takes to the stage under Hollie Doyle
James Ferguson is a trainer to keep on side this spring and he aims to improve his promising recent strike-rate with Drama.
The Highclere four-year-old heads the market for Kempton's feature 6f handicap (8.10) and is one of five course-and-distance winners in the field, with his last win coming here in September under Tom Marquand.
With Marquand engaged at Brighton on Wednesday, Hollie Doyle takes over and she has won on one of her three rides for the Newmarket trainer this year.
Drama is the only runner of the day for Ferguson, who is enjoying a purple patch and is operating at a 33 per cent strike-rate in the last fortnight.
Warwick: in-form Paul Nicholls eyes more success
Paul Nicholls has started the new jumps season in flying form with a 38 per cent strike-rate. The trainer has struck with five of his last 13 runners but both his Warwick chances are seeking their first wins for the yard this year.
Roadshow is partnered by Harry Cobden in the 2m3f maiden hurdle (2.40). The four-year-old has finished in the top four in all three starts this spring and was second at Newton Abbot last time.
Owner David Maxwell rides Cat Tiger in the 2m4f handicap chase (4.50). The 11-year-old has his first run at the track against four rivals, who include the hat-trick-seeking A Dublin Job.
