The Coral Scottish Grand National is a different type of race to the Aintree equivalent. It’s not only the fences that vary, but also the field that tends to line up.

There are obvious distinctions, like stronger representation from yards in the north, but also more subtle ones like the type of horse that runs. The imposition of strict rules on Grand National participation means that young, up-and-coming horses often don’t qualify for that. 

When you add in the fact that only the two at the top of the weights in this race, Blaze The Way and Quebecois, would have been rated highly enough to make the cut for Aintree, it’s clear the Scottish Grand National attracts a lower-class horse. But it’s still a strong contest.
