'She wins this. I think she's really good' - Tom Segal thinks this filly will take all the beating in the Matron Stakes

It's the final Classic of the Flat season on day three of the St Leger Festival at Doncaster and the Irish Champions Festival also gets underway today. It's an intriguing day of racing on both sides of the Irish Sea and Tom Segal has a filly he really likes in the Group 1 Matron Stakes at Leopardstown (4.25).

Speaking on In The Know show on Friday evening, Segal was confident Fallen Angel can continue improving.

Segal said: "Fallen Angel wins this. The ground's come right, the track's perfect, [she's] well drawn, I think she's really good. When she's on her A-game, she's really hard to get by. I thought she was excellent at Deauville last time when conditions weren't in her favour as they are this time.

"January just doesn't knuckle down, she's going to have to go past on the bridle and I don't think she'll be able to do it on this ground. I think Fallen Angel is going to step up again, that's why I don't fancy any of the others."

Trained by Karl Burke, the three-year-old is a three-time Group 1 winner, most recently when beating the reopposing Aidan O'Brien-trained January at Deauville in the Prix Rothschild.

Fallen Angel is the 9-4 market leader, ahead of January (3), Cerecene (4) and Exactly (5).

More key insight from In The Know

Hawksbill is going to be the pick. The gelding operation has certainly unlocked a new level of ability. The cheekpieces are on, he needs all the help he can get, but he's trending in the right direction.
Callum Helliwell fancies Hugo Palmer's runner in the mile handicap (1.15).

I think the faster ground is on the stands' side. All week they don't use it until the Portland. I've seen this film many times when something like Fivethousandandone wins this. He has Warren Fentiman taking 5lb off, he's drawn next to Jordan Electrics and Tim Easterby is in great form — this might be his day.
Segal thinks Tim Easterby-trained seven-year-old can make the most of a high draw in the Portland (2.25).

I think this is a cracking race. I think Aidan O'Brien will win it and I think Stay True is the value. After his run at Lingfield, the world and his wife said 'there's the Leger winner'. I thought his Voltigeur run was eye-catching, he looked the best horse in the race, and if that's the case I can see him improving a lot.
Segal can see the St Leger (3.40) going the way of Ballydoyle.

It's White Birch for me. He'll love a bit of cut in the ground and he's only had 12 starts as a five-year-old, so he can't fall into the 'old man category'. Dylan Browne McMonagle is taking over from Colin Keane and he is absolutely mustard in the saddle.
Helliwell is confident White Birch can rediscover his winning form in the Irish Champion Stakes (5.30).

The Pundit's NAPs

Segal: Galeron - "His best runs have come at Doncaster." (1.15, Doncaster)
Helliwell: January - "I hope the cheekpieces work first time." (4.25, Leopardstown)
Ross Brierley: Ten Bob Tony - "I want to see him do what he did at Haydock." (3.00, Doncaster)
