Ryan Moore was back among the winners on just his second ride back from a three-month injury layoff when steering Lazzar to victory in the 6f novice.

The three-year-old was sent off the 1-2 favourite and held off the late challenge of Tokyo Joe to strike for trainer Richard Hughes.

The victory came after Moore was beaten a neck into second on his comeback ride aboard Sovereign Wealth in the opening 7f nursery.

The jockey had been on the sidelines since suffering a stress fracture to his leg in August and looked set to make a perfect comeback aboard the George Boughey-trained juvenile, only to be run down in the closing stages by 11-4 chance Chale Chalo.

Moore's next mount is newcomer Evening Fades for William Haggas in the 1m maiden fillies' stakes (1.30), before he takes a rare ride for John and Thady Gosden on topweight Morrophore in the feature Winter Oaks Trial Fillies’ Handicap (2.00). The jockey got ahead of the game last weekend when riding the four-year-old in her latest piece of work in Newmarket.

Tom Goff, adviser to owner George Strawbridge, is more than happy to have Moore on board for the filly’s first start since September.

He said: “When John Gosden rang me and said that Ryan was available for the ride on Morrophore obviously we were delighted to have him. He’s one of the best jockeys in the world, if not the best. We wish him all the best with his comeback and hopefully it goes really well and he then goes to Hong Kong and rides lots of winners.

“Morrophore won well at Ascot when Luke Catton rode her very well. She got a bit sick in the middle of the year and had some time off and had a run up at Newmarket and we’ve kept her in training through the winter to have a crack at the Winter Oaks Trial and then the Winter Oaks itself in January."

Moore's final ride on the card comes on the poorly drawn Invited (2.30), who finished down the field at Kempton last month.
