Notable Speech deservedly favourite for the July Cup - but there's a 50-1 shot with untapped potential at the distance

If you want to own the favourite for a British Group 1 sprint, your best option is to run a top-class miler. That’s where supplemented 2,000 Guineas winner Notable Speech deserves to be in the July Cup market and he bolsters a somewhat sub-standard running. 

Charlie Appleby did something similar earlier in the season by rerouting this season’s Guineas third, Shadow Of Light, to the Commonwealth Cup. Shadow Of Light may have underperformed relative to market expectations at Royal Ascot, but that is moot and sprinting opens up another avenue for Notable Speech, who has never appealed as the strongest stayer over a mile.

It would surprise nobody if this Classic winner proved equal to the task. Alcohol Free did so in 2022, having won the Sussex and Coronation the previous year.
