'He needs to enjoy it and do what his dad tells him' - famous racing sons offer advice for Toby Moore

Ryan Moore’s 17-year-old son Toby has been urged to enjoy the occasion of his riding debut at Kempton on Friday by jockeys who know what it is like to follow in the footsteps of esteemed family members.

Cieren Fallon, the son of six-time champion Kieren, will appreciate how the teenager is feeling as he heads to the all-weather track to partner Godolphin's Valdorcia in the 6f fillies' novice (4.05) under heightened scrutiny and interest.

Putting on those famous blue silks and riding for his boss Charlie Appleby only intensifies the spotlight, but Fallon believes Moore will be well equipped for his first ride under rules.

"The best advice I can give is for him to go out and enjoy it," he said. "It's a first ride and there's no pressure. He's got a very good father who can teach him – he's not going to get better advice than that."

Fallon, a three-time Group 1 winner, was 19 when he made his riding debut and he remembers the added pressure of upholding the family name as his career started.

"I was excited more than anything. It was the same with a lot of media attention, but I came into racing a bit later," he said. "My father has ridden work with Toby plenty of times and he's said he's a very capable rider with a good head on young shoulders."

William Carson, the grandson of four-time Derby winner and five-time champion Willie Carson, also had a lot to live up to when he began riding.

He is confident this day will have been long in the planning as Moore's sole ride comes on Valdorcia, an Oasis Dream two-year-old who was third over the same course and distance on her debut last month under William Buick.

"He's the son of the greatest jockey to probably ever do it and he's riding for a trainer who wouldn't let him do it if he wasn't ready," said Carson. "He needs to enjoy it and do what his dad tells him to do – he'll know what he's doing anyway. He looks like he's on a horse with a chance of winning and hopefully it goes well for him."

From his own experience, Carson would encourage Moore, who has ridden since he was a youngster and has come through the pony racing circuit, to take on board all the help and guidance he can get.

"He's starting out young and he's got the right people around him," he said. "He should always be listening to them and taking their advice.

"In the early part of my career I thought I knew best and didn't always listen to my parents and grandad. I wished I had listened a bit more. The younger riders now are a lot more clued up and have a lot more help, so I'm sure he's going to do well."
