Going news

York was considering watering part of the track overnight ahead of the third day of the Ebor meeting. Raceday clerk of the course Anthea Leigh said: "It remains good to firm, good in places, but it was slightly quicker today. We won't touch the home straight but we might put something on the bottom bend and the back straight."

Runner in focus

The Sky Bet Mile Handicap (5.20) has attracted a competitive field and the progressive Montpellier will be partnered by Ryan Moore for the first time.

Trained by James Ferguson, the son of Wootton Bassett won his first two starts before finishing a close second at Salisbury in June. He came close to another career best when fourth at Glorious Goodwood last month and looks as if he should handle fast conditions and a step up in trip.

Ferguson said: "He seems to have been strengthening up all year. He's come out of Goodwood well, he's proven he can handle quick ground, and with Ryan Moore on board we'll be going there with plenty of confidence.

"We were slightly unlucky with the draw at Goodwood, but he's got every chance of running a big race here."

Ferguson added: "Wootton Bassetts can get a mile. I know it's very much a sprint pedigree, but he didn't appear to be slowing down last time."

4.10: Assured Data Protection EBF Fillies' Handicap

Daniel Kubler, joint-trainer of Ciara Pearl
She's in good shape and she's been a star for us having won a few races. It looks a very open race and it's worth a shot for a decent prize. On balance, her very best form is over a mile and a quarter. She's quite flexible in trip, she's won over everything from a mile to a mile and a half, but this distance is her best.

Harry Charlton, trainer of Roarin' Success
She's in good nick and has been running very consistently this year. This is a higher grade with some three-year-olds loitering, which makes it harder for these older mares, but she seems in good form and I hope the ground isn't too quick.

Spotlight's tip: Cape Flora
Zgharta is a tempting option back up in trip having endured trouble in running when a staying-on fifth over a mile at Glorious Goodwood, but preference is for fellow three-year-old CAPE FLORA. She bolted up at Leicester last month, for which she has received an 11lb rise, but this well-bred filly could have lots more to offer now things have clicked. [Ben Hutton]

4.45: British Stallion Studs EBF Convivial Maiden Stakes

Richard Brown, racing adviser to Wathnan Racing, owners of Naval Light
He's pretty talented. We ran him over five furlongs in the Norfolk Stakes at Ascot thinking it wasn't really ideal for him. Everything went wrong for him at Goodwood, and I think the seven furlongs will suit him. It's a competitive race, as it always is, but he should run very well.

Alan King, trainer of Spyce
He's a very nice horse but all mine need a run. The owner is there at York, so we thought we'd get him started, but he's a colt to look forward to. He should come on for the education.

Spotlight's tip: Inishbeg
The shortlist is headed by the particularly intriguing newcomers INISHBEG and Spyce, with interest heightened if the market signals are positive. [Steve Boow]

5.20: Sky Bet Mile Handicap

Clive Cox, trainer of Fearnot
His rise in the weights reflects his performances. We're hopeful we can still manage that rise and take one more step in a handicap.

Geoff Oldroyd, trainer of Big Leader
He's in good form and I've been pleased with his training. He's improved and we're hoping for a big run. It's a good step up for him and we think it's well within his capabilities.

Philip Robinson, racing manager to Saeed Suhail, owner of Point Of Contact
Andrew [Balding] has been really happy with him. It's a competitive race, but he worked well in his final gallop and his course form will help. It's always positive when they've run well on the track.

Spotlight's tip: Big Leader
Several runners tie in with each other. One from a different line of form is BIG LEADER, who brings an unbeaten record and may well have further progress in him. [Steve Boow]
