Racecourses in Britain and Ireland are bracing themselves for a "rough ride" due to soaring energy prices this winter with the Jockey Club's bill set to double next year and one independent track quoted an increase of 525 per cent.

Those tracks with fixed-term deals have received astronomical renewal quotes due to the energy crisis. Governments in Britain and Ireland have yet to announce any measures or support packages for businesses.

There will be a knock-on effect for the rest of the industry, with tracks juggling energy and heating bills with their contributions to prize-money and against the backdrop of this year's falling attendances.
