William Haggas hails 'remarkable' My Oberon after last-gasp Listed win

There were 51 races in Britain and Ireland on Saturday but it took a four-runner affair to provide one of the most dramatic finishes of the day, with My Oberon stealing the show in the Vickers-sponsored Midsummer Stakes in the dying strides.

With all runners under pressure on the turn for home, 11-10 favourite Modern News began to surge ahead and appeared to be clear.

My Oberon, ridden by Stevie Donohoe, trailed approaching the final furlong of the mile trip but produced a powerful late dash to storm up to the leader and just edge his nose in front as they reached the post.

The William Haggas-trained runner was winning for the third time this season and the second by a nose.

"He got there, just," said Haggas. "He's a remarkable horse really. He's not the greatest mover, but he's thoroughly genuine and he loved it. Thank God he got up in time."

Haggas has no immediate target in mind for My Oberon but the five-year-old is likely to be stepped up to Group level.

Confidence boost

Queen Mary fifth Miami Girl obliged at odds-on in the three-runner fillies' conditions stakes and is no bigger than 11-2 for the Weatherbys Super Sprint at Newbury next month.

She stretched clear of Cuban Mistress by a length and three-quarters to strike for Pat Dobbs and Richard Hannon.

Mrs Danvers followed up in Newbury's £200,000 highlight after her win in this race in 2016.

Andrea Atzeni rode a double on Dubai Icon for Saeed bin Suroor in the mile handicap and The Whipmaster for Gary Moore in the 1m 3½f handicap.
