'The novice hurdle could be informative'

A few went into my notebook. Doyen Breed may not end up particularly well handicapped as he appears to give his all each time, but he's a really honest novice chaser and can improve again when he goes over marathon trips.

At Kempton, the novice hurdle won by Ree Okka could be informative as the second, Dash Full Of Cash, is a nice type and the third, Pilot Show, made a particularly good impression as he stayed on after making a bad mistake – don't be surprised if they pop up in a race like the EBF Final at Sandown.

A more obvious one is Call Me Lord, who ran well to finish third in the Lanzarote and could be aimed at a race like the Coral Cup, where back-class can count for a lot. William Hill make him a 25-1 shot.

'A stayer worth keeping onside'

Leamington third Scipion has not even been priced up for the Albert Bartlett but I could see him going well in a race like that. This six-year-old was one of the first off the bridle at Warwick but saw out his race really well to finish third.

He lacked the racecourse experience of Stag Horn and second Gentleman At Arms, two hardy Flat stayers, and there should be much more to come. It was only his second start over hurdles and he looks a stayer worth keeping onside.

'He could be an ideal candidate'

There may not be a market for the €125,000 Liffey Handicap Hurdle at the Dublin Racing Festival but Autumn Evening emerged as an obvious candidate for the race in taking advantage of what looked a good opportunity at Fairyhouse on Saturday.

Autumn Evening has already proved himself in a big-runner handicap hurdle when landing the prestigious Lartigue Hurdle at Listowel in September and he should have enough scope to bag an even bigger prize.

There was a lot to like about his Fairyhouse success, although it wasn't a great race. He travelled like the best horse throughout and could be an ideal candidate for the Liffey Handicap Hurdle for Jessica Harrington. He's worth following in the big two-mile handicap hurdles this spring.
