Sunday: Haydock

Jedd O'Keeffe could not fathom the price of Devil's Angel after the well-named grey caused a 50-1 upset in the 6f handicap.

With an aversion to the starting stalls, Devil's Angel has had his good and bad days, but everything went to plan as the Titanium Racing Club's six-year-old, who was loaded last, won for the second time in three starts.

"We couldn't believe the price for a horse that won two starts ago," said O'Keeffe. "I know he's a bit hit and miss because of the stalls thing, but he was still a huge price and he's just a lovely horse to train."

Callum Shepherd is now unbeaten in two starts on Devil's Angel and enjoys the rapport he has with the sprinter.

"He's a bit weird and we're probably kindred spirits," the jockey said. "I think he enjoys being ridden with plenty of confidence and taking his time through a race, so maybe we suit each other."

The pair could go pot-hunting again at the final Sky Bet Sunday Series fixture at Sandown on August 21.

"He loves Sandown [won both starts there] and we'll look at a choice of races at the Saturday and Sunday meeting there in two weeks' time," O'Keeffe said. "It's a fantastic series, the owners had two runners in that race and got a huge thrill out of it."

Biggest win for apprentice

Sam Feilden gained the biggest success of his fledgling career on Silky Wilkie in the apprentice handicap.

The 20-year-old, nephew of trainer Julia Feilden, moved from Newmarket to Middleham at the start of the year and landed the £30,000 contest for his boss Karl Burke.

It was a fifth win for Feilden – and second on Middleham Park Racing's Silky Wilkie – and he said: "This is by far my biggest win, so it's pretty important. I love him, he's so straightforward and genuine and is a dream for a jockey. I'm in my first full year with a licence and I'm grateful for the opportunities Karl has given me."

Burke recorded his fifth victory of this year's Sunday Series and will scoop a £25,000 bonus if able to saddle two more at Sandown's finale.

Welcome tonic

Have Secret's last-gasp win in the 7f nursery was toasted by the Richard Fahey team as it provided 97-year-old owner Lady Manton with a valuable success.

The colt was an unlucky loser at Chester seven days earlier, but was much more at home at this track and snatched the £30,000 prize by a neck under Tony Hamilton.

"I'm delighted for Lady Manton, she's been an owner for a long time and is an absolute star," said Fahey's assistant Robin O'Ryan. "She'll be watching at home on television and she wasn't very well yesterday, so this is a nice tonic."
