Vogue Rogue! Bear delights syndicate with impressive handicap victory

On a day when many trainers and connections were at Tattersalls, the 16-strong Rogues Gallery syndicate took centre stage in cheering Rogue Bear to victory in the 1m½f handicap.

Boasting 160 members, including broadcaster Rishi Persad and an ambassador in former Wimbledon midfielder Vinnie Jones, the group have a progressive handicapper in this three-year-old.

Rogue Bear was a welcome winner for trainer Tom Clover, ending a 55-day drought, and is one to look forward to for connections next year.

Clover, who credited his pupil assistant Seb Burnett-Wells for his work at home with the winner, said: "Rogue Bear has always shaped as a nice horse and should be a lot of fun in handicaps. He's out of a staying mare and stayed this trip well.

"The Rogues have been really big supporters of mine and syndication is a very important part of our business. To have these cost-effective syndicates where people can be involved with several horses and enjoy days out on the track is brilliant.

"They're really good people and we have lots of open days, golf days and shooting days. It's lots of fun."

David Egan handed his goggles to a delighted young girl among the winning syndicate and completed a double aboard Typewriter in the 1m2f handicap, a second winner on the card for Andrew Balding following Secret Shadow's triumph under Hayley Turner in the 1m6f fillies' handicap.

Bright future

Grenoble is another name to note for next year after his relentless display in the 1m½f novice named after 1999 Derby winner Oath.

Oath landed this race on his third start at two and Grenoble, owned and bred by Newsells Park Stud, went one better from his debut second at Yarmouth.

Grenoble was the sole runner of the day for trainer William Haggas, taking his strike-rate in the last fortnight to 37 per cent (19-52).

Tom Marquand, who completed a double on Kattani for Mick Appleby in the 1m2f handicap, said: "Grenoble is relaxed about it all and a little bit green but he was well on top at the line. He's neither disappointing nor flashy at home and just does what he has to, but that can be a good trait as it means he's not overcooked when he comes to the track.

"He's done that really nicely and will stay further next year. The winter should do him the world of good."

Smart prospect

Bryan Smart's debutant Parisiac downed the 100-rated Coventry Stakes second Eldrickjones when making a successful debut in the 6f novice, joining Sussex Stakes scorer Mohaather and Listed winner Alwasmiya on the race's recent honour roll.

Parisiac cost £42,000 at the Goffs UK breeze-up sales in April and scored by half a length at 33-1 under apprentice Gianluca Sanna, who rides the colt everyday at home.

Sanna, who joined Smart this year, said: "He's a bit tricky at home but the boss gave me the opportunity to ride him and he showed his ability. I gave him one backhander and he just went. He'll learn a lot from today."
