More Group-race success for Hollie Doyle as Extra Elusive wins Rose Of Lancaster

Flat jockeys' championship contender Hollie Doyle enjoyed more Group-race success on Saturday, displaying all her guile in the saddle to land the Group 3 BetVictor Rose Of Lancaster Stakes aboard Extra Elusive.

Always in front rank and there to be shot at, Doyle kept cranking up the revs aboard the Roger Charlton-trained five-year-old, who found extra when challenged by his pursuers.

The duo were never further clear than they were at the line, with Doyle adding a second success at Group level after breaking her duck in the Group 2 Princess of Wales's Stakes on Dame Malliot last month.

"He has a tendency to pull quite hard so I went forward and he switched off beautifully," said Doyle. "He got into a good rhythm and the further he went, the better he went. He's a good horse - he'll stay a mile and a half."

Victory cemented Doyle's new role as retained-jockey for Derby-winning owner-breeder Imad Al Sagar, who owns Extra Elusive in partnership with Saleh Al Homaizi.

Doyle added: "It's been great, I couldn't have got off to a better start. It's been a great season and hopefully it will continue."

Veracious makes winning return

The cream came to the top in the Listed BetVictor Dick Hern Stakes, with Group 1 winner Veracious overcoming a big absence to register a fourth career success under Ryan Moore.

Owned by Cheveley Park, Veracious landed the Group 1 Falmouth Stakes at Newmarket last season, as well finishing second in the Sun Chariot and fourth in the Queen Elizabeth II Stakes.

Returning as a five-year-old and after wind surgery, Veracious was always handily placed and stuck on well after a 294-day absence to hold the late challenge of Posted.

"I was happy with her," said Moore. "It was her first run for a while and she should come on for it. She did what she had to today."

Varian dominates Ascot card with four-timer

Roger Varian was the trainer to follow at Ascot on Saturday card, saddling four winners from six runners at the Berkshire track.

The Newmarket trainer was on the mark with his first two runners and went on to complete a 210-1 four-timer.

Laneqash was the first to score for Varian and looks another exciting prospect for owner Hamdan Al Maktoum after making an impressive winning debut under Jim Crowley.

The son of Cable Bay was a £175,000 yearling purchase and looked well above average as he came nicely clear of his rivals for a three-length success.

Stablemate Line Of Departure added to his recent handicap success at Yarmouth when striking under David Egan in the following 6f nursery.

"He's a very laid back horse and it's just taken him a few runs to wake up and realise what his job is," said the winning rider. "He jumped well today and was always in a good position to pounce off a slow pace.

"He sustained his run all the way to the line which was nice."

Look Closely brought up the treble in the 1m4f handicap, in the process earning a 14-1 quote for the SkyBet Ebor at York on August 22, before Shandoz got up right on the line for Egan to win the second of the 1m4f handicaps, completing a fine day for the yard.

Egan added: "I was happy to bide my time on Shandoz and it was a great comeback run. His form has worked out great from his previous races and he's a horse with more to come."
