Turnpike Trip makes journey from Ireland worthwhile after landing gamble

No winner of the Cesarewitch Trial has ever followed up in the marathon itself and the wait will go on in 2021 as this year's winner Turnpike Trip is not even entered in the main event back on the Rowley Mile on October 9.

Not that it bothered punters who piled into the well-backed 15-8 favourite, who was a rare Irish runner in the 2m2f handicap. The dual purpose performer saw out the stamina test best under John Egan to see off topweight Live Your Dream.

Winning trainer Charles Byrnes was landing the warm up for the second time having won it with Domination back in 2012.

Egan, who had shed weight to get down to 8st 2lb for the winning ride said: "Turnpike Trip was impressive it's just a shame he's not in the Cesarewitch itself. I kicked on early to draw the sting out of the second as I knew he had plenty of weight."

Roger Varian is hopeful of running Teona in next month's Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe and revealed another connection to the Paris showpiece after his Sammarr had defied top weight in the 1m2f fillies' handicap.

The Newmarket trainer said: "The travelling head lad here is Taisei Danno who has been riding out for us for the past two weeks and is to go over to Paris shortly to ride Chrono Genesis in his last couple of pieces of work over there.

Royal win

Mellow Yellow got what is known as the 'Gold Season' on the Rowley Mile off to a flyer for punters when landing the opening mile fillies' novice stakes.

The Queen's filly had shaped as if a step in trip was in order when second over 7f at Newcastle first time and so it proved when she overcame newcomer Peripatetic in brave fashion.

Mellow Yellow was all but carried out on her shield afterwards as she was dismounted by Cieren Fallon after the line and came back very lame. After inspection Mellow Yellow was found to have suffered a fracture.

Trainer William Haggas said: "She did well to win but it looks like she has suffered a fracture which if she has will be a real shame as she is a nice filly.

"It looks like she will get a trip as she is a good stayer but she is a very genuine filly and she proved it today as she got a problem and still managed to win. We were always going to step her up in trip after Newcastle but she wants cut in the ground.”

Profilic pair strike

Equiano Springs rewarded followers of the Racing Post Signposts feature as the 100 per cent duo of Tom Queally and Tom Tate obliged again at the Rowley Mile.

The ground dried out rapidly during racing from good to good to firm which didn't suit everybody but Equiano Springs bounced off it to swoop late and deny Spring Bloom.

The 11-2 chance was backing up his win in the same race two years ago and Queally, speaking after his 25th winner of the year said: "I left it late as that is how he needs to be ridden but he likes it here and now has won three at the track."
