Timid but talented Arizona Flyer consents to start - and wins again for Winters
Mick Winters worked his magic with Chatham Street Lad last season and proved pivotal in more ways than one to the victory of Arizona Flyer in division one of the 2m5½f handicap hurdle.
Winters led the Thomas McNulty-owned mare around at the start and she looked unlikely to go on a couple of occasions having refused at this track last month, but she eventually consented and scored readily under Chris O’Donovan, backing up her victory at Tramore eight days ago.
The six-year-old is a half-sister to Tornado Flyer and her dam Mucho Macabi is a half-sister to former dual Champion Hurdle hero Hurricane Fly.
The trainer said on Racing TV: “She planted for some reason today and she has a phobia of fearing something in the distance! It’s taken her two years to get where she is as she was frightened of everything when she started out.
“She’s getting the hang of it and is well related, but we won’t overface her.”
Two from two
Itsalonglongroad and Paris Texas took their course records to 2-2 with victories in the 2m1½f handicap hurdle and feature 2m7½f handicap chase.
The versatile Itsalonglongroad, trained by John McConnell, has now won two chases, two handicap hurdles, two Flat races and a claimer on the all-weather from 48 starts.
Double delight
Jockey James O'Sullivan registered a double on two favourites, winning the opening 2m3f mares' maiden hurdle on the Peter Fahey-trained Butterflyvespiere and the 2m3f handicap chase on Robin De Roost for Tom Gibney.
