'Side with her next time too' - progressive filly thrills Middleham Park team

Bookmark, who bolted up to win by a staggering 17 lengths at Pontefract only seven days ago for Michael Bell and Middleham Park Racing, proved that was no fluke by making it back-to-back victories in the 1m2½f handicap.

Ridden by Hayley Turner for the first time, the three-year-old filly was once again slow away from the stalls and was in the rear for the early stages before staying on powerfully to score a shade cosily.

Middleham supremo Tim Palin is pleased to have discovered the key to unlocking her potential, explaining: "We used to put her in a hood to get her to settle down but the hood almost did too good a job.

"It served its purpose at the time but there came a point where we just had to take the gamble of taking the hood off and it seemed to work at Chelmsford in August, then it worked at Pontefract and it’s worked again today.

"She’s very versatile and she looks to be improving. There’s quite a bit of class in her pedigree and you would probably want to side with her next time."

Double for Probert

David Probert started the day in style with a double aboard a pair of two-year-olds he had not previously ridden.

Probert steered the Simon and Ed Crisford-trained Artaois, who was recording a first win at only the second attempt, to a comfortable success in the 7½f novice before narrowly getting up by a nose on Ralph Beckett inmate Unspoken in the 7f nursery.

Welcome winner

Dual-purpose trainer Jennie Candlish enjoyed her first winner on the Flat since June when It’s Good To Laugh landed the 1m4½f handicap in the hands of David Nolan.
