Racing Post experts give their horse to take out of the Derby

Fair play to Emmet McNamara, Aidan O'Brien and Serpentine but the 241st running of the Investec Derby was a farce. Nothing got close to the pacemaker, but English King was the one who caught my eye back in the field. He ran on well under Frankie Dettori to pick up minor prize-money and was arguably the best horse in the field all things considered. He'll make amends next time.

While Serpentine was a decisive winner I would be confident several in behind will turn out more profitable to follow in the long run. When the dust settles, connections of Kameko should be buoyed by the way he stayed over the testing trip and, provided the race has not taken too much out of him, the performance opens up several intriguing opportunities for the 2,000 Guineas winner later this season, probably over ten furlongs. English King was another to stay on strongly in the closing stages with the St Leger now looking an interesting proposition for him.

Only a couple of years ago Qatar Racing's Roaring Lion ran brilliantly in his Derby defeat when probably not staying the trip as well as his rivals, and the same could apply to Kameko. In a muddling race he finished well but we know from his 2,000 Guineas win he is far better than that run. Like Roaring Lion, the mile and a quarter will be his ideal trip and he could be a real force in races like the Juddmonte International and the British and Irish Champion Stakes.
