Prince Imperial keeps in-form trainer Hughes in the winning groove

Richard Hughes's rich vein of form continued when Prince Imperial struck in the 2m1f handicap in the hands of the trainer's apprentice Tyler Heard.

Hughes, champion jockey three times during a brilliant riding career, saddled a winner at Glorious Goodwood on Friday – the same day he enjoyed a double at Bath – and Prince Imperial was following hard on the heels of Bonnie Lad, who scored at Chelmsford on Monday.

That means five of Hughes's last 19 runners have been successful.

Flat's the way to do it

There was once a time when Dougie Costello riding a winner for Simon Munir and Isaac Souede would have come at a jumps meeting, but he teamed up with the owners to capture the 6f maiden with Hamaki, trained at the heartbeat of Flat racing in Newmarket by William Haggas.

Cheltenham Festival-winning rider Costello began focusing on the Flat in 2015, while Munir and Souede are among the leading owners in the winter code.

Brace for Easterby

Only Richard Fahey has saddled more winners at Pontefract in the last five years than Tim Easterby, who showed just why he is a trainer to follow at the track with a double.

Mikmak made his 60th start a winning one in the mile handicap for veterans – horses aged six or older – while East Street Revue kept on well to land the 5f handicap.

The pair were ridden by Easterby stalwart Duran Fentiman.
