Newmarket Academy turn to technology to view race on the July course
Unique times called for a unique solution, but the sixth year of the Newmarket Academy Godolphin Beacon Project Handicap went ahead with a difference as the July course meeting was live streamed for pupils at the local secondary school.
The project is a big deal for pupils, who achieved top marks this year when making eventual winner Spirit Mixer their paddock pick. However, Covid restrictions meant a different approach was needed for the project.
Newmarket Academy assistant principal Mark Kirby said: "The project is in its sixth year but due to the restrictions the only thing we can't do this time is bring the whole project group racing.
"To get around that, we've had this afternoon's racing live streamed to the school where they are watching us on a big screen in the hall.
"The things the year eights have done, however, is visit Dalham Hall Stud, the National Horseracing Museum, the British Racing School and Tattersalls."
Spirit Mixer, the first foal of shock 2015 Juddmonte International winner Arabian Queen, won at the eighth attempt when getting a dream run up the rail under Hayley Turner in the 1m4f handicap and kept Andrew Balding and owner Jeff Smith on a roll after Royal Ascot.
Ametist cuts down rivals
William Haggas is pondering whether to step Ametist up in trip after the 15-8 favourite flew home late to snatch the feature 7f handicap.
Tom Marquand hit a flat spot on the winner a quarter of a mile out but got rolling out of the Dip to catch 40-1 chance No Nonsense and the gambled-on Fox Champion late, completing a four-timer in the process.
Next month's Bunbury Cup is also an option for the four-year-old, who is 8-1 (from 10) for the handicap with Paddy Power.
Haggas said: "He's in the Bunbury Cup but it looks like he might need a mile now. We tried to get him into a couple of races at Royal Ascot but he missed the cut."
Passionova lowers new colours
Newsells Park Stud owners Graham and Marcela Smith-Bernal were at the July course to see their colours carried for the first time by newcomer Angel Amadea in the 7f fillies' novice.
The 14-1 chance showed promise when finishing third to Passionova, who put up a decent performance herself conceding 7lb all around.
Winning trainer George Baker said: "Not many can give the 7lb away in these races and that was even more commendable as Pat Cosgrave said she wasn't in love with the ground."
Ghiani closing in
Marco Ghiani moved to within five winners of losing his claim after the leading apprentice was successful on Akkeringa and Benefit Street.
Sent off the 2-1 favourite, Akkeringa got a dream run through the middle of the pack to master Great News in the 6f handicap for three-year-olds.
Successful trainer Stuart Williams said: "Marco deserves all the success he gets as he's such a hard worker. I remember in January that he rode a double in the first two races at Southwell and was still back to muck out at evening stables."
First for Meade
Former Newmarket-based trainer Martyn Meade returned to his old stomping ground to celebrate his first juvenile winner of the season when Detail scored on his debut in the opening 6f novice.
There was one downside to the win as assistant trainer Freddie Meade explained: "We had him gelded a while ago as he was a heavy horse as a yearling but I wish there was some way you can stitch them back on after that showing!"
