Lord North should run in the Eclipse - the race will play to his strengths

Where would you go next with Lord North?

Avoiding big clashes and running horses less seem to be a modern-day trend when it comes to campaigning top-class horses. Simply, providing he comes out of Royal Ascot in good shape, Lord North should run in the Coral-Eclipse. He may have had fitness on his side in the Prince of Wales's Stakes but he was still deeply impressive and would represent a real challenge to stablemate Enable at Sandown. He has earned a shot at a race that will play perfectly to his strengths.

This is an utterly different Lord North to the artist we used to know so he deserves a crack at Enable in the Eclipse. If wanting to swerve that showdown at Sandown, John Gosden could point to his only previous performance there when he blew out in a Listed race last May. He was gelded after that, though, and has turned into the ultimate pro. You can put him anywhere in a race, he has a lethal turn of foot and, with a scarcity of top-notch ten-furlong performers around at the moment, the Eclipse looks the logical next step. This son of Dubawi is now a class act.

There are no shortage of top-class races over 1m2f if connections opt to swerve stablemate Enable. The fact he is a gelding means we will, with any luck, see plenty of him and races like the Juddmonte International should be right up his street. With plenty of natural pace and tractability, Lord North looks tailor-made for York's showpiece event. A tilt at the Irish Champion Stakes could also be on the cards - a race Gosden won with the brilliant Roaring Lion two years ago - and the Champion Stakes. Aside from the Eclipse, there are plenty of options.
