Local success for Alqamar completes hat-trick after missing out on Royal Ascot

Alqamar was frustratingly denied an outing at Royal Ascot, but he returned home to give his connections something to cheer by racking up a hat-trick on his handicap debut.

Trained less than a mile from the course at Jimmy Moffatt's yard, the former Godolphin inmate missed the cut by one in last month's Ascot Stakes.

However, he made up for that disappointment with a decisive success in the female jockeys' hurdle under Charlotte Jones.

"He's quite a nice horse and we hope we can keep progressing," said Moffatt. "We're pleased with how he's taken to hurdling and at some point he'll have a little break and we'll see where we are, but I don't think he wants the deep winter ground."

Jones, who has ridden Alqamar on all three of his wins, caught the attention of the stewards as she edged across runner-up Pateen on the home turn, for which she was given a four-day ban for careless riding to be carried out in August.

The winner of the race is usually presented with a diamond pendant, and this year race sponsor William Hill stepped in to award Jones a gold bracelet.

First for Foster

Denise Foster struck with her first runner at Cartmel when 4-9 favourite Calagogo justified his short price in the 2m6f novice hurdle.

The Irish trainer's other runner Imperial Sachin's could only finish fourth behind the Justin Landy-trained winner Shetland Bus in the Cumbria Crystal Cup.

On a scorching day, trainer Stuart Crawford withdrew his two runners on the card as he felt temperatures were too high to travel his horses over from Northern Ireland.

Johnson suffers shoulder injury

Racing was delayed after jockey Alison Johnson was unseated at the first on Sweet Flora in the 2m1½f handicap chase.

Johnson was attended to on the track before being taken to the Royal Lancaster Infirmary with a shoulder injury.
