Safe Voyage bounced back to form in emphatic style to win the Listed 7f City Plate Stakes under a confident front-running ride by Jason Hart.

The John Quinn-trained eight-year-old had beaten just one rival in his last three races but the Ross Harmon-owned 15-8 favourite comfortably made all to take the £50,000 contest.

Quinn, who landed this race with another eight-year-old Blythe Knight in 2008, was delighted to see his stable favourite return to form, and said: "He’s a wonderful horse, we’re so pleased because as they get older, it’s like with people, you just wonder.

"He didn’t have a great experience in America [last in the Breeders' Cup Mile]. The ground ended up being very firm and he had a very hard time.

"The Lockinge didn’t go according to plan, but I wasn’t disappointed with him at Haydock. The last three weeks at home I’ve been very happy with him, so I was fairly confident he’d run a big race."

Targets at Goodwood and Longchamp are next on the agenda as Quinn expressed relief that there are still plenty of races left for his veteran. He added: "I needed to see what we saw there and now there’s a great autumn campaign for him all over Europe.

"I’ve got the Lennox firmly in my mind, and I’ve got the Prix de la Foret, in which he was a close-up third last year."

Hart completed a productive day’s work when winning the valuable 1m6½f handicap on the Ralph Beckett-trained 9-4 shot Oman.
