James Doyle on fire again at the Rowley Mile as Ottoman Fleet lands Fairway

James Doyle helped carry the Festival Of Suffolk Torch before racing on the Rowley Mile in recognition of his recent Guineas-winning exploits at the track and kept the flame burning when landing the feature.

His chance on Ottoman Fleet was almost squandered instantly in the Listed Fairway Stakes when the Godolphin runner stumbled at the start, but he still had the ability to outrun favourite Zain Sarinda.

The 13-8 chance was easy enough in the market but got a spilt when it mattered to give Charlie Appleby a fourth win in one of the last Derby trials of the season.

Ottoman Fleet was the winner of the opener

The winner was never engaged at Epsom as he is a gelding and only the third-placed Savvy Victory still holds an Epsom ticket from the six-strong line-up.

Doyle said: "Ottoman Fleet nearly went down at the start but managed to find a leg and they didn't go hard early which helped. He's straightforward and when they did get going it opened up a bit for him and he kept on well up the hill. He gets a mile and a quarter well and could get further, although I'll leave that to Charlie."

The next Cachet?

Mawj ran out an easy winner of the 6f novice for juveniles but has big shoes to fill as the six-furlong contest was won a year ago by recent 1,000 Guineas winner Cachet.

The daughter of Exceed And Excel was given an opening quote of just 5-1 by William Hill for the Group 3 Albany Stakes at Royal Ascot after blitzing Believing.

Mawj and Ray Dawson after winning the novice

Chris Burns, assistant to winning trainer Saeed bin Suroor, said: "Ray Dawson said she is a classy filly. That's our first juvenile two-year-old winner of the season and she could well go to Royal Ascot."

Dawson completed a double when Celtic Empress won the mile handicap for Heather Main.

Harry birthday

Harry Three made it third time lucky at the Rowley Mile for 2022 when giving his trainer Clive Cox a birthday winner in the 6f handicap for three-year-olds.

Harry Three: landed the 6f handicap under Adam Kirby

The 9-2 chance was drawn high, which was the place to be for most of the afternoon, and swept out of the Dip to see off River Pride under Adam Kirby.

Kirby said: "It's nice to give the boss a birthday present and Harry Three seems to like it here."

Torch relay

Grand National-winning jockey Bob Champion carried the Suffolk Torch to the Rowley Mile before racing on a leg of its 588-mile journey around the county as part of the Queen's Platinum Jubilee celebrations.

Champion was joined by Doyle in the parade ring after a tour of the track, which was a fitting start to the course's Festival Of Suffolk raceday which included a visit by a Second World War Hurricane fighter aircraft.

Champion said: "It's a great honour to be asked to carry the Festival Of Suffolk Torch today. It's great for Suffolk and great for Her Majesty as she loves racing and her stud is just up the road. The torch is due to finish its journey on June 1 at the Suffolk Show."
