'I'll be disappointed if we don't have 50 winners' - fledgling trainer aims big
Wednesday: Lingfield
Kevin Philippart de Foy enjoyed his second winner of 2022 when Mobarhin obliged in the 6f handicap and wasted little time in setting out his stall for the campaign.
"I'd be disappointed not to reach 50 winners this year," said the Newmarket trainer, who started in November 2020 and made fine strides last term when saddling 30 winners.
"We've had two winners so far and need to get the best out of every horse and get them all to win, which is obviously difficult, but we should be able to reach 50, while having big winners is something we're working towards too."
From a racing family, De Foy has plenty of experience having worked for John Oxx, Criquette Head and James Fanshawe among others and nearly won Salisbury's Group 3 Dick Poole with Pearl Glory in September.
"I was pleased with last year and it was good to have 30 winners in our first full 12 months," he added.
"We wanted to reach 30 and just missed out on winning a Group 3, which would have been great in our first year.
"For this year, we have more horses and better ones. We'll have 60 to 65, having started with seven in November 2020. We reached around 30 last year, but have built up and the yard's full, so we hope for another good season."
As for a horse to help put his name in lights, De Foy nominated ex-Richard Hannon inmate Elsals, an "exciting prospect" the trainer bought from the Shadwell draft in October.
