The long train journey from Glasgow was worth it for connections of Euchen Glen as he powered home to land the Listed Gala Stakes.

The eight-year-old, who won the Group 3 Brigadier Gerard Stakes in May, conceded weight and made up an enormous amount of ground to reel in the runaway leader Father Jazz under Paul Mulrennan.

"I was celebrating with two and a half furlongs to go," said Richard Johnstone, son of owner William. "I know the horse and once I saw him progressing, I thought 'this is it'. I'm absolutely delighted.

"He just keeps delivering. On the form, I thought the big danger was John Leeper but the one who made the running did us a favour. It was a last-minute decision for us to change tactics and hold him up."

His jockey was less convinced Euchen Glen was going to bridge the gap to the leader, and added: "I won't lie, two and a half furlongs from home, I looked up and Father Of Jazz was a long way in front. As soon as I gave him a squeeze, he picked up – he's a legend."

Euchen Glen could next be aimed at the Group 3 Glorious Stakes at Goodwood before the Qipco Champion Stakes in October.

Milestone for Bethell

Ed Bethell recorded the first Listed success of his burgeoning training career when Fearby bounded clear to win the Dragon Stakes.

The trainer, who recorded his tenth victory since taking over from his father James in January, watched Fearby score by five lengths.

"I'm a bit surprised by how well he's won," said Bethell. "He worked nicely in the spring and just came alive before he went to Newcastle, which was a good race. He then won for the first time at Wetherby.

"He's improved since and has worked with Moss Gill's lead horse, which is how fast I thought he was. I'm surprised by how far he won but not surprised he won – we were quietly confident he'd run well."

The trainer indicated Fearby could next contest the Molecomb Stakes at Goodwood or the Group 2 Gimcrack Stakes at York next month.

Verdon has still got it

Red Verdon rolled back the years in the Coral Marathon and set up a potential bid for the £500,000 Sky Bet Ebor at York next month.

The eight-year-old, who has raced all over the world, had not won since winning the Group 2 Prix Maurice de Nieuil at Longchamp last July but bounced back to form when striking late under Ryan Moore.

"He's almost won a stakes race every year and with the greatest respect to the others, I thought his price was quite insulting," said trainer Ed Dunlop. "I thought we were in trouble at one stage but they stopped a little in front. He's proved he can handle the hill.

"We chose this over the Northumberland Plate. There's the option of the Silver Cup at York next week but he'll have to be in exceptional form to run back so quickly. He's in the Ebor so we'll consider that."

Sonny lands a blow

Sonny Liston was forgotten in the market but caught the eye on the track as he demolished his rivals under in-form jockey Marco Ghiani.

The two-year-old, who is a half-brother to Group 2 winner Dame Malliot, was sent off at 18-1 and scored by five and a half lengths.
