'I can't believe she's got up' - Miranda gives away 15 lengths but still wins

Miranda recovered from gifting her rivals a near 15-length head start to scramble home in the feature 2m mares' handicap hurdle.

Conditional jockey Angus Cheleda kept his cool after his mount, giving weight away to all, planted herself at the start.

The Paul Nicholls-trained six-year-old, who took this race under Cheleda last year before stepping up to win the Grade 2 Yorkshire Rose Mares' Hurdle, used her class to cruise back into contention, eventually edging out the Emma Lavelle-trained Voice Of Calm, whose rider Tom Bellamy received a two-day suspension for overuse of the whip after the final flight, in a photo-finish.

Speaking to Racing TV, a relieved Cheleda said: "I can't believe she's quite got up. She caught me off guard because she planted and whipped round at the start, which is very unlike her.

"She's never shown any signs of doing it or ever done it, so it was a very game performance to get up. She travels so strongly that it's easier to make those moves, so it wasn't too bad. We got away with it today.

"She's a brilliant little horse and it's fair to say she was the best horse in the race and that's what's pulled it out of the bag."

Chase brace for George

Tom George enjoyed a 34-1 double as Jobesgreen Lad got off the mark at the 11th time of asking under Jonathan Burke in the 2m4f handicap chase and Tom Scudamore guided Raya Time to an emphatic 20-length victory in the 2m handicap chase on his second start since being switched from Henry de Bromhead's yard.
