It was clear for everyone to see that Winter Fog has quite a bright future as the 28-1 outsider provided 21-year-old James Murphy from Midleton in County Cork with his first winner.

Winter Fog was running for the first time since being banned for 42 days for not being ridden to achieve its best possible placing at Thurles in February. He finished fifth there at 125-1 and that run caught the eye of the stewards, who also fined trainer Donie Murphy €2,000.

This time Winter Fog was making headlines for all the right reasons, as a cool ride by the trainer's son saw him lead after the last and upset the Willie Mullins-trained 1-5 favourite Captain Kangaroo, who has the distinction of beating Kilcruit in a bumper.

Global triumph

It took longer than expected, a lot longer, but Global Equity finally broke her duck over hurdles at the 11th time of asking.

She had not won a race since storming up the hill to land a Galway bumper in October 2019. That statistic was not really her fault as trainer Joseph O'Brien opted to mix it with some of the best fillies in the business.

Global Equity got within a neck of runaway Coral Cup winner Heaven Help Us in a hot handicap hurdle at Leopardstown in February when giving Paul Hennessy's pride and joy 2lb. She was then runner-up at Listed level at Navan, and this month she was fifth to Skyace in a Grade 1 at Fairyhouse.

These were much shallower waters and punters knew it. Global Equity was supported into 1-3 and, while Eyre Square made her work harder than many might have expected, JJ Slevin always looked to have matters under control up the straight.
