'He's the most friendly animal in the world' - Greenside win thrills Candy

Retirement plans could be put on hold for Henry Candy’s stable stalwart Greenside after the veteran stayed on stoutly to land the feature mile handicap.

Greenside, known as 'Grandad' at Candy’s Kingston Warren base, gained a seventh success from 31 starts by three-quarters of a length under apprentice Rhys Clutterbuck in the £20,000 event.

It is no mean feat for a ten-year-old to be rated nearly 100 and Greenside continues to be a star for connections.

Candy said: “Greenside is a typical Dubawi – he's all heart. He's not the soundest but loves this soft ground and is the yard favourite. Being as highly rated as he is and needing this ground, opportunities are rare, but today was perfect.

“He's an absolute saint at home and the most friendly animal in the world. That will be it for the year and the plan was to retire him, but his owners may think again after that.”

Reason to smile

The weekend football could not have gone any worse for big Everton fan Martin Dwyer, but the rider started this week on the right note with success on Bella Caelia in the opening 7f handicap.

The Toffees suffered a shock 5-2 defeat to Watford on Saturday before arch-rivals Liverpool hammered Manchester United 5-0 the next day.

Dwyer said: “I needed that after the weekend. I went to bed in a really bad mood last night but a winner always cheers me up. Everton have had a lot of injuries – if I take my boots next week I might get a game.”

He added: “She kept responding and probably wants a mile. Having stamina on your side was crucial as it's pretty testing ground.”

Series winner

The final novice Flat amateur race of the series was not without drama, with two runners standing in the stalls when the gates opened, including Lockdown Dream for title-chaser Fern O'Brien.

He was deemed a runner by stewards, and fellow title-leader Lottie Crane failed to finish in the first three aboard Licit, meaning the two riders shared the championship. The 1m3f contest went to the Henry Main-ridden Nikolayeva.

Trainer Fergal O'Brien said: "Fern has done really well in her first year and she works incredibly hard, and we know Lottie well as she used to ride out for us when she was at college, so it's a nice result all round."

Family fortune

Black type will be the aim for Ey Up It's Maggie next year after she finished her season by winning the 5f handicap, with her half-brother Ey Up Its The Boss finishing second in the 6f nursery at Redcar.

Trainer Tony Coyle said: "She's tough, so consistent and had a great year. We'll try and get some black type next season."

Hefty suspension

The stewards suspended apprentice George Bass for 12 days for failing to ask for real or substantial effort on fourth-placed Buachaill, trained by Mick Channon, in the final two and a half furlongs of the 6f novice won by Tolstoy.
