'He was only rated 38 five starts ago' - Appleby's Noon stuns Godolphin hotpot

Mick Appleby: struck with 33-1 outsider Swinton Noon

Favourite backers were left cursing after Swinton Noon got the better of Godolphin's Symbolic Power in the 1m2f handicap.

Symbolic Power, a 2.3 million gns purchase as a yearling, was backed into 1-2 favouritism but never looked comfortable under Tom Marquand, eventually succumbing to Swinton Noon, a horse purchased for a mere 4,000gns.

The winner returned at 33-1 for Mick Appleby and jockey Theodore Ladd, taking his tally to three wins from his last five starts on what was his first run at Lingfield.

Swinton Noon had been running off a mark of 38 in a handicap at Southwell as recently as November, but he has well and truly turned the corner since then.

Ladd lauded Appleby for his training performance with the son of Sepoy, saying: "When the entries came out I was wondering what Mr Appleby was thinking. The horse was only rated 38 five starts ago, but it just goes to show what he can do with horses."

Perfect from Shoemark

Kieran Shoemark executed a perfect front-running ride aboard the Archie Watson-trained Highland Dress to take the feature 7f handicap.

Jumping cleanly, the pair scorched into an early lead and proved not for catching as they held off their seven rivals with ease for a two-length success.

"We didn't see another horse and felt no pressure throughout," Shoemark told Sky Sports Racing. "He's got a wicked turn of foot and is still improving, and I think there's definitely some nice races to be won with him throughout the rest of the year."
