'He was just loving it' - Bachasson makes it five in a row with Red Mills win
From scoring on his Irish debut in the summer of 2015, Bachasson has been a winning machine without seeing the racecourse too often, and he landed his fifth win in a row this term, making it a 15th career success, with one of his most convincing performances in Tuesday's Grade 2 Red Mills Chase.
This Gowran meeting finally got the green light after two previous cancellations last month, and for connections of the winner it was certainly worth waiting for as Bachasson went further and further clear from the second-last to beat previous Grade 2 scorer Castlegrace Paddy by 16 lengths under Paul Townend.
Winning trainer Willie Mullins said: "He's a real advertisement for what you would call a handy horse, and it just shows that they come in all shapes and sizes. He was bought as a bumper and hurdles horse and not a chaser, he just had such scope.
"He was really brave today and Paul said he was just loving it. He is just one of those exceptional horses that loves the game for the amount of racing he has done.
"We will just try and find similar races for him. The Webster Cup at Navan might just come too soon, but we will mix it with him over hurdles and fences if the conditions are right."
No Grey Area's leaves no doubt
The Martin Hassett-trained No Grey Area's landed his third win in four starts and is likely going to have to go up a grade if he's to continue his winning run after turning a competitive-looking 2m4f handicap hurdle into a one-horse race.
Ridden by his usual partner, amateur Paddy King, the son of Califet made all of the running and gradually spreadeagled his rivals before scoring by an unflattering 15 lengths from the hat-trick-seeking Street Value.
"Making the running was Plan B, we were going to drop him in mid-division." said Hassett. "We made a mess of it with him last day at Thurles, we should not have run him. He missed work because of frost, and you can't do that with him because he's a stuffy horse, but he's a serious one, I think.
"We left it to Pa, he gave it a serious ride. I don't know what the handicapper is going to do, but it's a good day for us."
Jet jumps to victory
Whatever local trainer Barry Fitzgerald has been running lately has been performing with great credit, and he snared a deserved winner when Jumping Jet made a very impressive debut in the concluding mares' bumper, scoring by 29 lengths.
One press colleague said afterwards that he had never seen them strung out so far in a bumper on a sunny day, with a mere 264 lengths separating first and last.
It was a red-letter day, too, for young rider Kieran Callaghan, 17, a local chap from Old Leighlin who rode his first winner of any description on just his second ride on the track.
Callaghan rides out five days a week for Mullins and admitted that he could not believe how far clear he was inside the last furlong.
